There but for the grace of God, go I…

As I walked through the park this morning with my dog, I had blue skies above and the sun warming my back. It was a beautiful morning and the temperature hinted of a gorgeous day to come.

I found myself looking at the ground, an unwanted habit I have, rather than what surrounded me. So I stopped and looked up, took a deep breath and breathed it all in.

Doing this automatically puts your headspace in to a better, more positive place. Well for me anyway!

And this morning it was a place of gratitude.

I started to think of my beautiful surroundings and how lucky I am.

Then interestingly, my thoughts went here….

It could all have been so very different.

By the sheer fluke of something greater than me – God, Higher Source, Divine Light, Someone Out There, Quantum Physics – what ever you want to call it, I was born in Melbourne, Australia.

A country where life is good, where we have so much available to us, excellent food to eat (I aint talking Maccas!), clean water, a good education, stable government, good employment … you get my drift?

Or I could have been born to another family…

In Syria, Ethiopia or Somalia or so many other countries that are struck by conflict, devastation, destruction, drought and death daily.

What would have my life have been like then?

Who would I be?

How would I be living right now?

Would I even be alive right now?

These is where my thoughts wandered while I walked.

I don’t think I was being particularly morbid or depressive, instead thoughtful, curious and in the end very grateful.

As the well known saying goes…

There but for the grace of God, go I.

How often are we truly grateful for what we have?

We all get so caught up in the mundane, the nitty gritty of life.

So many times in our busy daily lives we look down and behind rather than up and forward. As said earlier I have the habit of looking down often… and my intention is to change that from right now!

Looking down and behind into your past, more often than not pulls in the negative vibes. It can keep you stuck.

Think about the sheer physicality of this position, it takes your body into a closed position. Your head is lowered, often shoulders crouched, sometimes a stoop…

Open up, stand tall, look up and forward.

Remember to stop and give thanks often (even when you’re feeling shitty) for the small and the big things in your life. Even for the mundane stuff. Be positive. (read more here)

Why?

Because for each and every one of us, our lives could be so very, very different.

The Art of Positive Thinking…Are You Any Good?

And let me tell you, positive thinking is an art!

The concept of positive thinking has been on my radar a lot lately. I suppose that is not a coincidence, as ‘the mindset’ is something I love spending time learning about, and I do call myself Your Mindset Nutritionist after all.

Positive thinking is not as easy as it sounds.

This morning I finished the book Excuse Me Your Life Is Waiting – The Astonishing Power of Positive Feelings. by Lynn Grabhorn, (I think her surname is the perfect one for her book!).

In brief, the book is about the Law of Attraction, which no doubt you’ve heard and maybe read lots about. This concept became wildly popular with the movie The Secret in 2006, but in fact this concept has been around since the early 19th century.

Wikipedia describes it as this…

The law of attraction is the name given to the maxim “like attracts like” which in New Thought philosophy is used to sum up the idea that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts a person brings positive or negative experiences into their life. This belief is based upon the idea that people and their thoughts are both made from “pure energy”, and the belief that like energy attracts like energy.

So the basic premise is this….

We are made up of energy, yes we exist in a physical body form but our true essence is energy. How you then use this energy/life-force that you possess, whether negatively, positively or just flat lining, then it is this energy that attracts what comes or what doesn’t come into your life…

People, relationships, events, bank accounts, your wellness, your waistline etc. etc. etc.

The unfortunate thing is, our brain tends to operate more on the negative side of thinking than on the positive.

Spend a day listening to your thoughts and unless your tens steps ahead of me on this, (if so Go You!),  then I think you’ll be surprised with what you find.

A whole lot of negativity.

It may not be the kind that hits you over the head and keeps you in a black hole but it might just be small negative thoughts that are constant in your thinking.

You may not realise this but every negative emotion you feel…

  • Worry
  • Fear
  • Blame
  • Anxiety
  • Hurt
  • Guilt
  • Anger etc. etc. etc.

Comes from a place of lack. Lack of what we really want….

So if we are constantly spending our time in a negative headspace and think about the things we don’t want i.e I don’t want to be overweight/fat/have no energy, even though we are saying you DON’T want this or to be like this, we are concentrating our thoughts on lack…of what we don’t have.

So guess what you’re going to get more of and attract…the same.

Am I starting to make sense?

I find this topic fascinating and I’m going to delve more into exploring it over the coming weeks. If you’re in the mood to delve into some more of my musings on this topic go here.

In the meantime you can, only if you want to change for a better you, do something about this. As I mentioned earlier, take time this week to look at the thoughts you’re thinking.

Every time you find you thinking something negative or involving a negative emotion or thinking about something you don’t have or don’t want, then…

  1. Stop that thought
  2. Take a deep breath (or 5)
  3. Switch/flip immediately to something positive.

I don’t care how little that positive thought is.

Whether it is thinking about…Seeing a new flower bud, looking at the moon in wonder, or a grand thought, such as the love of your child/partner/parents/friends.

4 Doable New Year’s Resolutions.

It is almost 2017, and you’ve probably started to think about your New Year’s Resolutions.

Am I right?
 
So many people commit to huge New Year’s resolutions that are nearly impossible to achieve. Then, they end up not reaching their goals.

One suggestion I have for you is to make your New Year’s resolution ACHIEVABLE this year.
 
When you do achieve your goals, you will be so much healthier.
 

Here are four perfect resolutions that are totally achievable:
 
#1. Hydrate with more water

Did you notice when you drink more water you feel better? Water helps your body to run better and will even help you to lose weight. Water will help give you a beautiful, youthful glow too.

And who may I ask does not want to look more youthful?

Grab a water bottle and keep it with you throughout the day. This will make it that much easier to achieve your goal, and it will be so beneficial for your entire body.

#2. Crowd out unhealthy foods

Unhealthy foods that are filled with sugar and toxins do our bodies no good. Instead of just eating because you have a sweet tooth craving or because something looks delicious, eat because you want to nourish your body.

If you eat foods that will give you energy and help you to feel better, you’ll be on track for a healthier New Year. So, start 2017 by eating whole foods that nourish and benefit your body, rather than those foods (you know the ones!) that deplete you.

#3. Move more

Most people think of a New Year’s resolution as heading to the gym every morning. Although this is a great goal, it can sometimes be unachievable with your schedule. You don’t need to head to the gym to move more. In fact, if you sit all day it’s a very good idea to go for a walk on your lunch break, or stand up and move in between breaks…just move?

Make moving fun in 2017. You will feel so much better!

#4. Let go of negative thinking

Every person has thoughts that creep into their head, including me and I’m Your Mindset Nutritionist! Sometimes we can become more judgmental and critical of others in our head, or even put ourselves down. In 2017 make it a goal of yours to stop the negative thinking. This will help you to be an overall happier person and will even help you to become healthier.

When you are thinking of your goals for 2017, I recommend that you start with an achievable goal that will really help you become a happier and healthier you!
